We offer pupils a wide range of sporting opportunities, whatever their ability. Specialist sports lessons commence in Reception, with competitive matches starting in Year 3.
We value participation as equally important as performance. Engaging in sports nurtures teamwork, sportsmanship, discipline and resilience. It's not solely about winning or personal achievements but also about relishing the sport, contributing to the team, and acquiring valuable life skills that extend beyond the game.
A strong record exists in our core sports of athletics, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rugby, swimming and tennis, including success at county, regional and national levels.
Cricket is offered as a club option from Year 1 and forms part of the curriculum for girls and boys in Year 2. With over 350 fixtures played across 50 teams each season, home matches are played at our picturesque Jubilee Sports Grounds. This year, some of our U11 girls were selected for the Sussex county teams.
Rugby forms part of the sports programme from Year 2, and from Year 1, pupils can choose to join our tag rugby club. Our commitment to developing young talent is evident in the success of former Prep pupil Marcus Smith, who now proudly represents the England Rugby team and the British and Irish Lions. Rugby is delivered in a supportive and nurturing environment where our experienced coaches utilise a variety of non-contact and contact formats to instil a passion for the game. Our rugby seasons see 26 teams participate in regular competitive fixtures, and our U11A boys' team annually participates in competitions such as the Sussex Cup and Rosslyn Park 7s.
Our netball programme provides an excellent opportunity for pupils to develop their skills and passion for the sport, starting from Year 2. Our netball training focuses on enhancing fundamental skills such as hand-eye coordination, agility, teamwork and strategic thinking. 26 teams have showcased their dedication and commitment to the sport through regular fixtures.
Athletics is held at the Withdean Stadium in Brighton, where our girls and boys from Years 5 to 6 enjoy athletic activities such as sprinting, javelin, long jump, high jump, shot put and relay races. During the summer, parents are invited to celebrate the achievements of our pupils at our annual Sports Day. Last year, five of our pupils qualified for the National Prep School Athletics Championships.
Our extensive clubs programme offers accessible tennis clubs, allowing pupils to develop their skills and passion for the sport. As part of our physical education curriculum from Year 4, pupils receive tennis lessons to enhance their proficiency and understanding of the sport. Our U11A girls' team secured the prestigious title of Sussex County Champions last year, showcasing our commitment to fostering excellence in tennis.
Our Football club for girls and boys starts in Year 1. From Year 2, football is a part of our sports programme for all pupils up to Year 6. With over 200 fixtures played during the season, 44 teams showcase exceptional dedication and commitment to the game. The U11A boys' team achieved the status of IAPS National Finalists three times in the past four years.
With over 300 hockey fixtures played across 50 teams each season, hockey is taught from Year 2 to all pupils up to Year 6. With an emphasis on skill development, teamwork and sportsmanship, our training sessions aim to instil a love for hockey while fostering important values beyond the playing field. Our highly qualified sports coaches ensure that every player has the opportunity to learn, grow and succeed in a fun and supportive environment.
Swimming forms part of the curriculum from Reception to Year 6. Pupils regularly participate in galas and IAPS competitions to promote teamwork and sportsmanship. Starting from Year 4, pupils use the Alexander Lido at the College. They learn various swimming strokes, such as freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Additionally, swimming squad sessions are available from Year 4, providing further skill development and an opportunity to continue enjoying the sport. This year, seven pupils qualified for the IAPS swimming national finals held in the London Aquatics Centre.
Our PE and games curriculum promotes physical fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship among our pupils. Through various activities and sports, pupils develop fundamental movement skills, learn the importance of regular exercise, and embrace the value of fair play. Our curriculum instils a lifelong love for physical activity and healthy competition while fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all pupils from Nursery to Year 6.
