After climbing Mount Vesuvius, the pupils visited the sites of Herculaneum and Pompeii, on which the fiery mountain wreaked havoc in AD79. Breathtakingly preserved by the ash which fell on them, these towns gave a powerful insight into the day-to-day lives of their inhabitants and their final moments.

In addition to visits to other classical sites, namely the beautifully decorated Villa Poppaea at Oplontis and the amphitheatre at Pozzuoli, pupils also got the chance to visit the nearby island of Capri, where the Emperor Tiberius retired in AD26 in favour of the beauty and serenity it offered in comparison to the hustle and bustle of Rome.

Amidst the sightseeing and dive into the classical world, pupils also took part in some pizza-making, traditional folk dance and even ice cream-making.
