The best way to experience what life is like at Brighton College is to join us at an Open Morning, where you will have the chance to talk to pupils and teachers about what makes our school such a special place.
Scholarships are awarded during the admissions process to recognise talented pupils who show great promise in a particular area of school life. Scholars are expected to act as role models in their fields of interest.
Successful pupils are rewarded with an annual amount deducted from their fees, which lasts throughout their time at the College.
Academic
Academic Scholarships are awarded based on performance at assesment and interview. All candidates are automatically considered for an Academic Scholarship based on their assessment papers and interviews.
Art and Photography
Candidates are given a practical exercise and will have an interview with the Director of Art and Photography. Candidates are asked to submit a digital portfolio of their work in a variety of media from the past year, both in and out of school.
Dance
Candidates will be asked to perform a one and a half minute classical, modern, or contemporary dance solo accompanied by an instrumental piece of music, as well as participating in a contemporary dance class of 15-20 minutes in length. Candidates are asked to bring a critical review of a recent live performance they have watched, and there will also be an interview with the Director of Dance.
Design and Technology
Candidates will sit a problem-solving design paper, sketching ideas and developments to their solution. There will be an interview with the Director of Design and Technology, and candidates are asked to submit a digital portfolio displaying a range of design-related skills for discussion. Practical outcomes will be assessed through photographs and videos included within the portfolio
Drama
Candidates areasked to perform two short speeches; a pre-1956 monologue and a post-1956 monologue offering a contrasting character and style. There will be an interview with the Director of Drama, when candidates should be prepared to discuss their interest and activities in theatre.
Music
Candidates must be able to offer two instruments (which can include the voice) and should be minimum Grade 7 on one of their instruments. Candidates will be asked to play or sing two prepared pieces; one on their first study and one on their second study. There will be an aural test, as well as an interview with the Director of Music.
Sport
Scholarships are generally awarded to pupils at county or regional level in their chosen sport(s), and candidates should be at least representing their school A team to be considered for an award. The College’s main sports are rugby, football and cricket for boys, and netball, hockey and cricket for girls.
Since September 2020, Brighton College has offered 20 free 16+ places in our Opening Doors scholarship programme.
This initiative makes Sixth Form places at Brighton College, one of the world’s leading schools, available to talented and ambitious young people from the local area. With fully-funded Sixth Form scholarships, we hope to attract local pupils for whom our pastoral care and academic rigor will offer a life-changing opportunity. This may include:
- Pupils who are eligible for free school meals;
- Pupils in care or who have been in care;
- Pupils who would be the first in their families to attend university;
- Pupils who have experienced a significant disadvantage, or who have been displaced, such as a refugee.
With outstanding academic opportunities, an amazing range of activities and sport on offer and continual support in developing practical life skills, the Opening Doors programme will allow pupils to enjoy studying their chosen subjects, to access a place at a leading university, and begin preparing for their future career.

With the aim of giving more children the opportunity to flourish, a bursary is awarded on the basis of a means-test form and offer a fee reduction appropriate to the individual situation of each family.
Bursaries are reviewed each year and may change as a family’s financial situation changes. They are given for day places only.
Application window for bursaries:
- Year 12 entrants: 1 August – 31 October, two years prior to joining (13 – 10 months ahead)
- Existing pupil bursaries: Annual review during Hilary term.
