Sixth Form pupils with Richard Cairns and the Headmaster of the Year trophy

We are proud to announce that our Head Master, Mr Cairns, was named UK Head of the Year at the Tatler Schools Awards at the beginning of September.

Hosted in London, the awards are recognised as the Oscars for independent schools across the country. Tatler name Mr Cairns as going ‘above and beyond’ in his role as Head Master.

What makes the award more special is that the school understands that he is the only Head to win this award twice!

This prestigious award follows on from the newly-published Tatler Schools Guide 2023, which describes Brighton as providing “a masterclass in education”.

Congratulations, Mr Cairns! You can read the full Schools Guide entry below:

“Combining an enlightened approach with a kindness-driven culture, Brighton provides a masterclass in education.

The ISI gave both the College and its Prep School perfect scores in every category in its 2021 report – and it’s easy to see why. Applications are on the rise, with three to four per place, and results are incredible: last year, 98 per cent of GCSE grades were 9-7, and 100 per cent of A-level grades A*-B.

This translated into 15 per cent of leavers heading to Oxbridge, the majority to Russell Group universities with others receiving offers from Princeton, Yale and Harvard.

Visionary Head Richard Cairns is called ‘inspirational’ by too many parents to count – one selected Brighton for her children after hearing him make a remarkable speech – and his end-of-term emails are the stuff of legend.

The school’s design is thoughtful and beautiful, and our researcher thought it wouldn’t be at all out of place in an interiors magazine. With an expected opening date in 2024, a fabulous new Performing Arts complex is set to include a 400-seat theatre and more.

Meanwhile, the fantastic outreach programme includes work with the dispossessed: pupils and teachers meet with refugees from the local Syrian Community Action Group to help with conversation and interview skills, prepare them for Life in the UK tests, and provide support for their children.”
