Pupils in blue boiler suits on the stage at a Robotics competition

The senior robotics team journeyed to the First Robotics Competition Haliç Regional in beautiful Istanbul, Turkey, over the Easter break.

They got off to a difficult start, with some of the parts damaged in transit. As an international team – named ‘Gear Zero’ – they were at a disadvantage, forced to promptly reassemble their robot before the competition started. Luckily, after the first day, our talented and relentless engineers got the robot up and running, boosting them up to the top 20 immediately – a massive achievement for such a large-scale international competition.

With their tremendous joint effort, they made it to the finals, having shown an outstanding example of just how hard work and teamwork pays off. As the only team from Britain (India has more than 70, Turkey
has over 90), our team stood out, not only due to our phenomenal robot, but also due to their dazzlingly professional kit, designed by our pupils.

Their trip was not limited to just robotics, as, on the first day, they all had the opportunity to go on a tour of Istanbul’s most historical places: the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and even the Science and History Museum!

The team were unfortunate to be knocked out in the quarter finals, but are hoping to come back stronger next year!
