The yearly Upper Sixth trip to complete the Three Peaks 24-hour Challenge took place on Monday!

After a long drive to Scotland, eight pupils and five staff set off to hike Ben Nevis. The challenge from here was to hike each of the highest peaks of England, Scotland and Wales – Ben Nevis (Scotland), Scafell Pike (England) and Snowdon, now known as Yr Wyddfa (Wales), all within a 24-hour time period, which includes the time it takes to drive between them.

Ben Nevis, the highest of the peaks, took the lead group 4 hours 17 minutes, closely followed by the rest of the pupils, and they were well on course to complete their hikes within the timeframe. It was dry en route up, but foggy up top, and everyone was in good spirits, as they made their way to Scafell Pike.

Conditions were near perfect for Scafell Pike and they witnessed a stunning sunset above the clouds at the peak. The difficulty was that they were hiking the second half in the dark, with head torches. However, nothing phased the pupils and the lead group completed the hike in 2 hours 35 minutes, a record time for Brighton College!

They made it down just before midnight and set off on the long, bumpy ride to Yr Wyddfa. Having faced two road closures between Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike – one due to an accident and one due to overnight road closures, which meant they were forced to sit still for over an hour, they finally arrived at the foothills of Yr Wyddfa with just under four hours to complete the final climb.

But they pushed on and the lead group finished the final hike in 2 hours 44 minutes, and the challenge in 23 hours 30 minutes – our fastest yet! The final groups came in with minutes to spare, meaning they finished within the 24 hours – the fourth year in a row we have successfully completed the challenge.

A fantastic achievement and one for which we raised £4000 (so far!) for CALM. The group were awarded the Achievement of the Term in Presentation Assembly. A big thank you to all the pupils and staff for their help to make the trip possible and all of you who have donated.

There’s still time to support the team and the amazing work that CALM are doing – if you would like to donate, you can do so via this link: https://www.justgiving.com/page/bcthreepeaks2024
