Having flown into Boston, the pupils had a jam-packed first day in the States. Starting the day with a walk through old Boston and, over the River Charles, Dr Van Santvoort gave a potted history of Boston . This was followed by a fascinating student-led tour of MIT. 

After this, was a trip to Harvard where the pupils enjoyed meeting more current students and seeing the historic campus. For the third university of the day, the pupils visited Northeastern, and were particularly impressed by its newly-opened robotics and engineering lab.

The final stop of the day was at the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum, which was beautifully lit by night.

 

 Day 1 (1)

On day 2, the group visited two Ivies, Brown and Yale, and were thrilled to have Old Brightonians show us around both. Om  and Pietro showed them around the Brown campus, where they learnt about its unique ‘open curriculum’. Brown’s rugby coach, Coach Le Flamme, later led a tour around the extensive sports facilities.

It was then a journey to Yale, where Kenny and Shaun greeted the pupils, who found out more about its collegiate system and beautiful libraries.

Day three, was a whirlwind of a day in New York City. After a quick stop at Grand Central Station, the day was kicked off with a visit to the iconic One Vanderbilt with its mirrored viewing platforms and clear views of the city in all directions.

The group then navigated the subway to Washington Square Park to meet with familiar faces Venetia and Eleanor, who shared stories of their experience studying at NYU so far. Next stop was the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. It was a powerful and reflective moment for everyone, as they took in the significance of the site, and the importance of the events of 9/11 to both New York and the modern world.

From there, it was a journey uptown to the beautiful grounds of Columbia University to meet OBs Theo and Tarit, who gave a unique insight into life studying on the campus in the city.

The pupils enjoyed dinner at the bustling Chelsea Market and ended on a high note with a the brilliant Broadway show, SIX.

On day four, the group headed from NYC to two more Ivies, stopping first at Princeton, where OB James greeted them for a fantastic tour, admiring the beautiful architecture and hearing about impressive research opportunities.

From there they headed to Philadelphia to visit the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), where OB Bogdan gave a guided tour of the campus, sharing his knowledge of the world-class engineering programme and the renowned Wharton Business School.

On the final day of the trip, the morning began with a visit to Georgetown University, receiving a warm welcome and introduction before commencing the campus tour, learning about the amazing array of visiting speakers, including Barack Obama.

They then had a walking tour of the National Mall headed up by Dr Van Santvoort. Finally, it was a visit the National Museum of African American History for a thought-provoking afternoon.
